Gogol is realism in all its ambiguity and 'irrationality' The three stories in this collection—Gogol's “The Mantle,” Melville's “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” and Dostoevsky's “An Unpleasant Predicament”—dramatize and investigate the problems of our bureaucratized world with near-mystical, farcical realism (Gogol), philosophical-comical, doubt/faith-driven fervor (Melville), and the The Double is the most Gogolesque of Dostoevsky's works; its subtitle "A Petersburg Poem" echoes that of Gogol's Dead Souls. Vladimir Nabokov called it a parody of "The Overcoat". Many others have emphasised the relationship between The Double and other of Gogol's Petersburg Tales.

Dostoevsky was one of the pioneers of realism in the modern novel, and Notes from Underground (1864), along with his later novels, belongs to this genre. Realist writers—Honoré de Balzac in France, Charles Dickens in England, and Nikolai Gogol and Dostoevsky in Russia, among others—reexamined the entire purpose of the novel.
